Firefighter's Pride
For more than 100 years, the firefighters of New York have been devising clever slogans for their firehouses, drawing on history, imagination and quirks of personal character to identify themselves and to distinguish their companies from the rest of the department. About 30 years ago, they began to match these slogans with colorful, artistically rendered patches. Today, many firehouses have doors adorned with the images on the patches
Worn on sleeves, the patches are a fire company’s statement of uniqueness. They emerged not only from the custom of companies’ coining nicknames for themselves, but also from an even older tradition of decorating fire engines with elaborately painted murals.
